We came from down upon the Swanee River yesterday, traveling on country roads, instead of the Interstate, through Georgia, arriving at the Corps of Engineers RV campground in Appling, GA, which is on the outskirts of Augusta, just South of South Carolina. Our trusty GPS did fairly well, but it did take us on two unnecessary tours to nowhere. We were quite surprised to see that even dirt roads were listed on the thing. It was necessary for us to travel on one of these for about a mile. Even more surprising was that we traveled through a few ghost towns. Buildings were in ruins all over the place, and it made us wonder if the saying that, "the South will rise again", is really accurate. Not all of the state is like that, though. Some of the homes in this area are fantastic.

Set up went quickly after our arrival, but Bill had a bit of difficulty setting up the Direct TV dish. He's not the only one. We had a fellow knocking on our door early this morning asking how we did it. This guy had been full-timing in his motor home for 5 years.

It has been a long time since we have had an opportunity to experience Fall foilage. Many of the leaves have turned in this park, and tons of them are blanketing the ground. We have a propane gas heater in the RV as well as an electric faux fireplace which puts out a good deal of heat. We also have a separate space heater that we use in the bedroom at night. We will be giving all of these heaters a good workout for a number of weeks while we visit the North country. We were forced to buy slippers the other day so we could keep our feet warm. We are definitely not used to cold weather.

We decided to go to Golden Coral for dinner last night. Unfortunately the directions we were given by our campground hosts turned out missing a turn or two. They have no conception of distance around here. We thought the place was fairly close, but the round trip turned out to be about 40 miles. The food turned out to be unspectacular, and we spent the remainder of the night fighting indigestion. We will be here for two more evenings before we head to a campground near Kannapolis, NC where daughter Holly and family dwell. We still have no clue where to stay while we are there.
