The sign says it all. We are now in Sam Houston Jones State Park in Southwest Louisiana, about 30 miles East of Beaumont, TX. We traveled here across nearly 220 miles of bayous on some of the longest bridges in the country. We have been here for 6 days, and will leave tomorrow for a 4 night stay in San Antonio. We have already visited Davy Crockett's birthplace. Now we can visit the Alamo where he met his match. We will then head down to the Corpus Christi for a month prior to heading to the Rio Grande area along the border in Mercedes, TX.
Texas state parks are very expensive. They charge about $20 per night plus $5 per night per adult. Arizona, New Mexico, and California don't seem to have much to offer in the way of state parks either. We therefore made the decision to join Passport America who offer a 50% discount at private RV parks throughout the country. God willing, we will be staying at one of their parks tomorrow night.
We had a wonderful dinner at The Olive Garden for Valentines, and went out this afternoon for a gourmet meal at Wendy's. We also discovered a casino during this stay. We filled out their "comp club" forms, and we each received $20 in slot machine play. We played for hours upon hours and went away with over $100. We decided to go back yesterday. We played for hours upon hours again, and wound up giving them back our winnings, but we had two days of fun for free, so no complaints.
More to follow...
